New Directors Roster Additions

We present a preview of six of the directors to be featured in our next Directors Roster, appearing in the Third Quarter 2005 edition of Directors & Boards.

Saflink Corp
Asa Hutchinson


A founding member of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. In 2003 was confirmed by the Senate as the nation’s first Under Secretary of Border and Transportation Security, responsible for more than 100,000 federal employees.  During his tenure he initiated modernized border inspections and the development of a biometric entry-exit system for foreign visitors to the U.S. Previously led the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency. From 1995-2001 represented Arkansas in the U.S. House of Representatives. From 1990-1995 served as chairman of the Arkansas Republican Party. In 1982, he was appointed by President Reagan as the U.S. Attorney for Western Arkansas, making him the youngest to hold that position in the country. Formerly spent a 21-year career as an attorney in Arkansas. Age 55.

Saflink provides software security products. Revenues are $5 million.



Tenet Healthcare Corp.
Brenda J. Gaines


Retired in 2004 as president and CEO of Diners Club North America, a unit of Citigroup, where she spent a 16-year career. Joined Citibank in 1988, serving as SVP of its Diners Club unit in 1992 and president of Diners Club in 1999. Began a public service career in Chicago in 1970 when she joined the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Also had served as head of the Chicago Department of Housing. From 1985-1987 was deputy chief of staff to Chicago Mayor Harold Washington. In 2002 was recognized by Fortune magazine as one of the “Most Powerful Black Executives in America.” Also a director of CNA Financial Corp. and Office Depot Inc. Age 55.

Tenet operates general acute care hospitals throughout the United States. Revenues are $10 billion.



Hemispherx Biopharma Inc.
Steven D. Spence
Senior Officer
Valued Ventures LLC


Has 20 years' experience in the financial services industry. Spent a 16-year career at Merrill Lynch & Co., where he held various executive positions including COO for the security services division, global head of the broker dealer security services division, and global head of financial futures and options. In 2003 he founded Valued Ventures LLC to foster the development of small-cap companies.

Hemispherx is a biopharmaceutical company. Revenues are $1 million.



Paxson Communications Corp.
Larry Patrick
Patrick Communications LLC



Has extensive experience in the broadcasting industry, having consulted with more than 300 broadcasting and cable companies and overseeing the sale of more than 60 television and 100 radio stations. Previously served as COO of Gilmore Broadcasting, a $250 million radio, television, and cable operation. Also served as SVP of the National Association of Broadcasters.

Paxson owns and operates the PAX TV network. Revenues are $277 million. Patrick Communications is a media investment banking and brokerage firm, which also provides management consulting to radio group owner Legend Communications.

Diana F. Cantor
Executive Director
Virginia College Savings Plan



In present position since 1996, where she is responsible for the administration, operation, and investment management of a $10 billion program. Previously served as vice president of Richmond Resources Ltd., a  real estate development, construction, and management company. From 1985-1990 she held various executive management positions at Goldman, Sachs & Co., including vice president. Formerly was a real estate attorney with the law firm of Kaye, Scholer, Fierman, Hays & Handler in New York. Age 47.


Media General is a communications company that operates newspapers, television stations, and online enterprises primarily in the southeastern United States. Revenues are $900 million. Virginia College Savings is an independent agency of the Commonwealth of Virginia, which manages the state’s three tuition plans.



Brown Forman Inc.
Patrick Bousquet-Chavanne

Estee Lauder Inc



Has spent nearly 35 years in the cosmetics and beauty industry. In present position since 2001. Joined Estee Lauder in 1989, where he has held various management positions including general manager of Aramis International Inc. and president of Estee Lauder International Inc., responsible for brand direction in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and the Asia Pacific region. Began his career at Elizabeth Arden Inc.


Brown Forman produces and markets consumer products and wine and spirits, including Jack Daniel’s, Southern Comfort, and Finlandia. Revenues are $3 billion. Estee Lauder is an international cosmetics company. Revenues are $6 billion.
